About Nigerian Navy

The Nigerian Navy (NN) is the naval force of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces. With 75 warships, it is the fifth strongest navy in Africa. Originating from the Nigerian Marine, the NN was formed in 1914 after the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria. Its main responsibilities include port administration, dredging channels, buoyage, lighting, ferry services, and touring launches. The NN was formed in 1957 and transformed into a full-fledged Navy in 1959. The Navy Act of 1964 expanded its constitutional tasks, including coast guard duties, customs law enforcement, hydrographic surveys, and naval training. The NN has participated in several peacekeeping missions.
